Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Hawaii Renters
In Hawaii, your landlord can deduct the cost of cleaning from your security deposit if the unit isn't returned in the condition you received it, apart from normal wear and tear. A thorough move-out clean is the simplest way to protect that money. Check your lease and move-in condition report first, then work through this list.
Kitchen
Clean inside the oven, fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher. Wipe out every cabinet and drawer. Degrease the range hood and backsplash, scrub the sink, and clean appliance fronts and handles. Pull the fridge and range out if you can and clean behind them.
Bathrooms
Scrub toilets inside and out, including the base. Remove soap scum and hard-water buildup from tubs, showers and glass. Clean mirrors, vanities, inside drawers and cabinets, and treat mildew in grout and caulk.
Living areas and bedrooms
Wipe baseboards, door frames, doors and light switches. Dust ceiling fans, blinds and vents. Clean closet shelves and window sills, and spot-clean scuffs on walls.
The spots people miss
Window tracks and sliding door tracks, the inside of light fixtures, the lanai, the dryer lint trap, and the top of the refrigerator. Landlords notice these.
Take photos
When you're done, take date-stamped photos of every room. If there's a dispute later, they're your best evidence.
